Diamond Knife Repair & Servicing

A diamond knife is an ophthalmologist's most valuable surgical instrument. A precise edge to perform with as little resistance and best wound histology as possible optimizes surgical outcomes. Using a dull or rough scalpel that causes incision leakage could result in critical seconds lost that impact success rates.
Diamond knife service and repair is our specialty! As the pioneer of diamond knifes, our craftsmen have decades of experience repairing and evaluating diamond scalpels from virtually every manufacturer. Let our knowledgeable staff inspect and clean, remount, rehone, or replace your diamond tips to make them like new again!
We recommend sending in your diamond knife a minimum once a year to check diamond holding epoxy, diamond edge and calibration.
Mastel offers two types of diamond knife services:
1. On-demand diamond repair service - ideal for when attention is required or unexpected service is needed. This option provides flexibility and support whenever a repair need arises.
2. Annual Maintenance Program (AMP) - a proactive approach whereby diamond knives are inspected and serviced on a planned schedule. This helps to support consistent performance, reduce downtime and extend the service life of valuable instrumentation.

How to Initiate a Service Request

Clean and sterilize your items - for safety and handling by our staff
Package items securely to avoid damage during shipment
Complete the appropriate Repair Request Form for your service (ensure email address is included)
Email one copy of form to sales@mastel.com and print/include 1 copy of Repair Request Form in your shipment. Ensure contact information is included inside package.

Frequently Asked Questions - Repairs

Does Mastel Surgical repair only its own brand of diamond knives, or non-Mastel brands also?

Mastel services ALL brands of diamond knives and blade types. A representative will always provide a repair quote. While we strive to help surgeons find the best performing scalpel for their needs, in some situations a new scalpel may be deemed to be the best option. In this case a trade-in option for a Mastel diamond knife at a discount may be recommended.

What happens during the repair of a diamond knife?

When Mastel receives your diamond knife, it is immediately evaluated by our expert repair technicians. Mastel diamond technicians are renowned for their quality and quickness. After evaluation, our Customer Service team will personally reach out to you with a quote for the repair. Once the quote is approved, the diamond repair(s) begins. Most repairs are complete within 24 hours of receipt.

What can I expect during the cleaning and inspection of the diamond knife?

Although surgeons and/or their trusted staff clean and sanitize all instruments after every case, over time saline and cellular buildup still occurs. After we receive the diamond knife, the diamond edges holding epoxy and handle are cleaned. If we notice any problems or issues with the scalpel during inspection (for example, the handle sticking or components broken), we will reach out to provide a quote for repair. You can expect your diamond scalpel back in good as new condition, satisfaction guaranteed!

How long will it take to repair my scalpel?

The turn-around time for repairs can vary depending on factors such as extent of damage and type of blade. Most repairs are complete within 24 hours of receipt and in many cases, we can ship a scalpel back to you the next day. However, our diamond department will be in contact to discuss the extent of damage, cost of repair and delivery time.

Do I need an RMA/RGA to send in a repair?

It is not necessary to obtain an RMA/RGA number from Mastel Surgical prior to sending in the diamond knife or instrument. However, you can call to advise us of your shipment. Please print a copy and include it in the shipment and also email the completed Repair Request Form to sales@mastel.com.
